KEM Diabetology Research Centre has a national and international reputation for its research on why Indians are more susceptible to diabetes. We have conducted a number of studies with adults, children and pregnant women. These studies have popularised the concept that the risk of diabetes and heart disease is established in the mother's womb.
The Unit has become famous by describing the 'thin-fat' body composition of Indians which increases their risk of diabetes. We also described the role of maternal nutrition (particularly of vitamins B12 and folate) in increasing this risk. We have internationally comparable expertise and state of the art infrastructure to make relevant scientific contributions and have established collaborations with leading experts in this field. Various techniques of body composition measurements are available at Diabetes Unit such as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) and anthropometry.
